Supporting Students who are Young Carers (SSYC)

45 minutes (online) - £50 for five logins, £5 for additional logins

This course is suitable for anyone who works with young people who are young carers, or would like support in identifying young carers in their centre.

The course covers:

  • The rights of young carers as set out in law and legislation
  • An insight into the caring tasks taken on by young carers
  • How being a young carer can impact a young person’s health and development
  • How to establish an environment in your workplace where young carers can be identified and supported

The video presentation is just under 30 minutes long. With the action points and the multiple choice assessment, the course will take about 45 minutes.

The course tutor is Sarah Collin.

Sarah has been supporting young carers between the ages of 5 – 25 years old and their families for 20 years. She has worked directly with three local authorities to deliver young carers services, of which she has been in a managerial role for award-winning young carer services for the past 10 years. Sarah regularly chairs, participates and presents in National health, wellbeing and development forums and research projects, advocating for the rights and support needs of young carers and their families. She creates pathways for young carers to use their voices to influence decision-makers and co-produce services that meet their needs. An accomplished trainer, Sarah has worked alongside the Department of Health and Social Care, the Department of Education, NHS England and multiple VSOs to create research-informed training packages to support workplaces across a variety of sectors to effectively identify and support young carers. The processes Sarah equips workplaces to develop assist in the collection of accurate data and provides effective evidence to support CQC and Ofsted inspections. She works as an independent young carers’ trainer and consultant.

Courses can be viewed in either of the following ways:

  1. A group of staff accessing the course together at the same time. For this we recommend that you use a digital projector and large screen with speakers to amplify the presentation. This has advantage of group interaction and monitoring of involvement. OR
  2. Each member of staff has an individual login and accesses the training on their own device. This has the advantage of flexibility, as the course can be accessed at a time/place to suit the individual (in school/college or at home).

Each login will give access to the chosen course for 10 consecutive days from the selected start date and the course (or parts of the course) can be accessed as many times as required within this 10-day period.

There is an optional multiple choice assessment to participate in after accessing the training. There are 15 questions randomly chosen from a bank of 30 and you will have 15 minutes to complete the assessment. There is no pass mark, this is simply an activity to help consolidate the information you have learned on the course. If you choose an incorrect answer you will be able to see the correct answer when you have completed the assessment.
