SUPPORTING STUDENTS WITH ADHD AND ADD

This course is suitable for any member of school or college staff who works with students who have been diagnosed with ADD or ADHD or who are suspected of having these conditions. It would also be of interest to other educational professionals such as counsellors or educational psychologists and it would help parents of ADD/ADHD children as many are unsure how to form a partnership with their child’s school or college so the child would not be disadvantaged.

The course will cover:

* The ADD/ADHD spectrum and prevalence rates
* Diagnosis – where and how
* Core features and successful strategies in and out of the classroom for inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity
* Social skills, behaviour and attainment issues
* Plus points
* Co-morbidity and what to do about oppositional defiant disorder, conduct disorder, anxiety and mood disorders, including Tourette’s syndrome
* Strategies for concentration, improved behaviour and increased academic attainment
* Checklists, useful books and organisations and where ADD/ADHD is on the neuro-diverse spectrum

The course tutor is Ronnie Young
Ronnie has been a teacher all her working life in schools, colleges, pupil referral units and prisons. During her long and varied career she has taught many children with special educational needs and those with behavioural difficulties, and has also managed large SEN departments. She has a particular interest in neuro-diversity (the hidden difficulties of dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADD/ADHD and Asperger syndrome) as she is herself severely dyspraxic, her elder son has Asperger syndrome and she has a nephew on the ADD/ADHD spectrum. She is a practising OFSTED inspector in both schools and colleges and is a recognised and respected trainer nationally and overseas, specialising in behaviour management and working with young people with neuro-diverse conditions.
